“We are Progressive Humanists.

We are the Soul of the Coffee House.

We are Love and Laughter.”

The above photograph symbolizes humankind’s place in the universe as revealed by scientific exploration, eschewing both myth and superstition. Taken by NASA’s Voyager 1 space probe on 14 February 1990, at the request of astronomer Carl Sagan, it captures planet Earth from a distance of over 6 billion kilometers as Voyager 1 was about to leave our solar system and enter interstellar space. Sagan later immortalized this image in his book, Pale Blue Dot. This distant image of our tiny world inspired Sagan’s reflection that “Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the universe, are challenged by this point of pale light.”
